Uijeongbu is named after the highest council of the Joseon state, and local tradition says why: when King Taejo came back from Hamhung in the early 1400s and stayed in this valley, his ministers rode out to discuss state affairs with him here. The temple on the hillside, Hoeryongsa, is said to take its name from the same return, “the dragon came back.”

The city’s modern story is the one that reached every Korean dinner table. After the Korean War, US Army camps ringed Uijeongbu, and ham, sausage and bacon from the bases ended up in a pot with kimchi and gochujang. The result was 부대찌개 budae-jjigae, “army base stew”, and the street where it was first served still has a dozen restaurants. Today Uijeongbu adds two things you would not expect from a commuter city on Line 1: a public library devoted to music and another devoted to art.

The short answer

  • Where: directly north of Seoul. Line 1 to Uijeongbu Station, 22 stops from Seoul Station without changing.
  • Best for: budae-jjigae at its birthplace, a market crawl, two free specialist libraries, and temple hikes on the edge of Bukhansan National Park.
  • Must-see: Uijeongbu Music Library, by Balgok Station on the U Line (closed Mondays).
  • Must-eat: budae-jjigae at Odeng Sikdang (since 1960) and buckwheat naengmyeon at Pyeongyang Myeonok.

How do you get to Uijeongbu from Seoul?

Line 1, straight north, no transfer. Take a train toward Soyosan, Dongducheon or Yeoncheon (not one that ends at Kwangwoon University). Inside the city, the driverless U Line light rail links the sights: it opened in 2012, runs 15 stations from Balgok to Tapseok, and meets Line 1 at Hoeryong; at Uijeongbu Station, LRT Uijeongbu is a short walk away.

Because of heavy vehicle maintenance, the U Line has run every 4 minutes at peak and every 5½ minutes off-peak since 2 January 2026, according to Asia Economy. Line 7 already reaches Uijeongbu at Jangam, a small station inside the Dobong train depot, but two bigger projects are not here yet: the Line 7 extension through Jangam and Tapseok to Yangju was 62% built at the end of August 2026 (Jangam itself was closed for track work in October and reopened from a temporary station on 31 October 2026), and the GTX-C express line, which will stop at Uijeongbu Station, entered full construction in September 2026 with no opening date set.

What is Uijeongbu known for?

Budae-jjigae first, then mountains and a new library culture. Ask a Korean about Uijeongbu and the first answer is the stew; the second is usually the US bases or the mountains (Dobongsan and Suraksan rise on its edges). The city has leaned into a third identity since 2019 by building specialist libraries, and it lists the Art Library, the Music Library, the U Line and Jeil Market among its official “eight views.”

Uijeongbu in six dates

  • 1403 — By tradition, Taejo stops at the temple later called Hoeryongsa on his way back from Hamhung.
  • 1960 — Odeng Sikdang starts as a street cart and, by its own account, begins serving budae-jjigae.
  • 1978 — Uijeongbu Jeil Market is established.
  • 2012 — The U Line light rail opens (July 1).
  • 2019 — Uijeongbu Art Library opens (November 29).
  • 2021 — Uijeongbu Music Library opens (June 3).

Budae-jjigae was never army food: it was what people living around the bases cooked from what came out of them. VisitKorea’s listing for the street makes the same point, and credits Huh Young-man’s food comic Sikgaek (an SBS drama in 2008) with making the street famous. The city holds a festival there every October; the 19th ran on 24–25 October 2026.

Budae-jjigae Street — A short street next to the former Yangju county office, designated by the city as a tourist theme alley. VisitKorea counts 12 restaurants, centred on Odeng Sikdang, and notes that parking is free for diners. It sits right at Exit 2 of Uijeongbujungang Station on the U Line, and Jeil Market, the Haengbok-ro pedestrian street and the east plaza of Uijeongbu Station are all within walking distance.

Uijeongbu Music Library — Opened in June 2021, two minutes from Balgok Station. The city describes its collection as centred on Black music: jazz, blues, hip-hop and R&B. You can play records in the LP zone, listen in the audio room, and catch performances in the third-floor music hall. Note the temporary closure for stock-taking from 10 to 13 November 2026.

Uijeongbu Art Library — The older sibling, opened in November 2019 in Minrak-dong. It works as a library of art books with an exhibition hall attached, and the shelves are open to anyone. It is off the rail network: the library itself suggests bus 10-2 from Dobongsan Station (about 20 minutes); there is free parking.

Uijeongbu Jeil Market — A large traditional market, established in 1978 and about a five-minute walk from the budae-jjigae street. Above ground it is an everyday market; below ground is a warren of counter-style food stalls serving gukbap, sea snails and spicy chicken feet, which local bloggers have nicknamed “the dungeon.”

Hoeryongsa and Sapaesan — From Exit 1 of Hoeryong Station, walk to the Hoeryong visitor centre and follow the valley trail up to Hoeryongsa, a Buddhist nunnery inside Bukhansan National Park. Temple tradition dates its founding to 681; it was burned in the Korean War and rebuilt in 1954, and the five-storey stone pagoda and an 1887 Buddhist painting survive. Above it rises Sapaesan, a 552 m granite peak at the northern end of the Dobongsan ridge. Even if you stop at the temple, the valley walk is pleasant.

Mangwolsa — A temple high on the Dobongsan side, founded in 639 according to its records and named for “gazing at the moon” toward the Silla capital. It is still a meditation centre, and the octagonal stupa of the Goryeo monk Hyegeo stands on the slope above the main hall. It is reached only on foot, by mountain trail from the side of Mangwolsa Station, which is named after it; wear hiking shoes.

Odeng Sikdang (Hoguk-ro 1309beon-gil 7) — The restaurant the city recognizes as the original. It started as a cart in 1960 and now also sells meal kits and runs branches, but the main shop is still here at the mouth of the street, with an annex further in and its own car park. Order the budae-jjigae and add ramen noodles to the pot. It is certified as a 백년가게 baengnyeon gage, the SME ministry’s “century store” label. October 2026 posts list daily hours of 08:30–21:00, last order 20:30.

📍 Open in Naver Map

Uijeongbu Myeongmul Budae-jjigae (Hoguk-ro 1297beon-gil 26-20) — The big alternative on the same street, in business for more than 30 years according to VisitKorea. Two floors and several hundred seats make it the easy choice for groups. Rice, dongchimi, bean sprouts and kimchi are free refills, and sikhye rice punch comes after the meal. VisitKorea lists 09:00–23:00, open every day.

📍 Open in Naver Map

Pyeongyang Myeonok (Pyeonghwa-ro 439beon-gil 7) — The head shop of the “Uijeongbu school” of Pyongyang-style naengmyeon. The founding family’s children went on to run Pildong Myeonok and Eulji Myeonok in Seoul, so this is the root of a whole family tree. The broth is clear and lightly beefy, the buckwheat noodles are nutty, and a pinch of red chili flakes on top is the house signature. Order chilled pork or beef suyuk on the side. An October 2026 post lists 11:00–20:20 (last order 19:50), closed Mondays, no takeaway.

📍 Open in Naver Map

Jidonggwan (Uijeongbu-dong, Rodeo Street) — A Chinese-Korean restaurant that 2026 posts describe as 60 years old, listed by VisitKorea as a Baeknyeon Gage and featured in the Blue Ribbon guide. Families come for jjajangmyeon, spicy jjamppong and fried rice, and there are private rooms and a lift. A 2026 post lists 11:00–21:00 with an afternoon break, closed Mondays.

📍 Open in Naver Map

Namwonjip, Jeil Market underground (stall 41) — One of the counter stalls in the market’s underground alley, said by its regulars to have been running since 1978. Sundae-gukbap (blood-sausage soup with rice) for lunch, or whelks with chewy jjolmyeon noodles and boneless chicken feet with a drink in the evening. An October 2026 post gives the gukbap at 7,000 won.

Timing tips

Who Uijeongbu suits: food-focused travellers, music and design fans, and hikers who want Bukhansan National Park from its quieter northern side. Avoid Mondays, when both libraries, Pyeongyang Myeonok and Jidonggwan close. On 7 November 2026 the city holds a street festival along Haengbok-ro, Rodeo Street and Jeil Market. For hiking, see Korea's national park rules and fines.
