The short answer

The truck sending furniture up the outside of an apartment is a sadaricha, a moving ladder lift. It takes bulky items to a window or balcony.
Full packing, or pojang-isa, can include packing, transport and unpacking. Agree the scope and any extra equipment in a written quote.
Moving has its own customs: lucky lunar dates, rice cake for new neighbors and practical housewarming gifts. Customs vary between households.

Turn a corner on a Seoul residential street and you may see a refrigerator traveling up a steel rail toward an apartment window. Nobody is treating it as an emergency. A household is moving.

The truck is the visible part of a service built around vertical housing: bulky furniture, shared elevators and crews who may pack an entire home.

What is a sadaricha, and why use the window?

A 사다리차 (sadaricha) is a truck-mounted ladder lift for goods. A powered platform travels along an extendable rail outside the building. Movers load furniture through a suitable window or balcony; people do not ride with the load.

The reason is often practical. A wardrobe or refrigerator may not fit through an elevator door, corridor or stairwell. Using the exterior route can also reduce competition for the building’s shared elevator. The crew must first check access, ground conditions, overhead obstructions and the opening itself.

There is no universal maximum floor

Reach depends on the actual model, load, angle, distance from the building, wind and site conditions. Ask the operator to assess the site; a floor number alone is not enough to book safely.

What does moving cost in Korea?

The scope, volume and date matter more than a standard national price. General moving, semi-packing and full packing assign different work to the customer. Ask whether the quote includes a ladder truck, elevator charges, appliance work, storage and cleaning.

포장이사 (pojang-isa) means the crew handles packing as well as transport and agreed unpacking. Cupboards, fragile belongings and furniture need different treatment, so put the division of tasks in writing. It can remove much of the work, but someone should still coordinate access and check the handover.

Compare the same job

Give each company the same inventory, dates and addresses.
Ask for an assessment of bulky furniture and the loading route.
Have equipment, parking, elevator reservations and any additional charges written into the quote.

Why do moving dates matter?

School schedules, lease handovers, weekends and popular lunar dates can concentrate demand. Spring and autumn are familiar moving seasons, but a single pair of months does not describe every city or household. Ask for alternative dates when comparing quotes.

Lease handovers also shape demand. Korea’s Housing Lease Protection Act generally treats an unspecified term or a term shorter than two years as two years, while allowing a tenant to assert the agreed shorter term. Son eomneun nal: dates without troublesome spirits

In folk belief, 손 (son) is a spirit that moves between directions and interferes with people’s affairs. 손 없는 날 (son eomneun nal) are days when it is absent, traditionally chosen for moving, weddings or opening a business. This describes a belief, not a promise of good luck.

The relevant lunar dates are the 9th, 10th, 19th, 20th, 29th and, where the month has one, the 30th. Their solar-calendar dates change. Popular dates can mean fewer available crews and higher quotes; we could not confirm a universal annual count or standard surcharge, so compare actual dates with the mover.

Why do new neighbors give rice cake?

It can be a greeting as well as a traditional good-luck gesture. 이사떡 (isa-tteok) is moving-day rice cake. Red-bean 시루떡 (siru-tteok) connects with the folk belief that red beans ward off harmful spirits. Not every modern household follows it, but a small packet at the door may mean someone has just moved in.

The housewarming, 집들이 (jipdeuri), has another recognizable custom: toilet paper and detergent as gifts. Unrolling paper suggests life unfolding smoothly; abundant suds suggest prosperity. They are useful gifts that also tolerate duplicates.

Lamps, diffusers, wine, cooking oils and decorative objects are alternatives. Consider the recipient’s home and preferences rather than treating any gift as compulsory.

What should you check on moving day?

Keep clear of the lifting area and follow the building’s agreed plan. A visitor watching from the street should stay outside the barriers; a customer should have confirmed access and the written job scope.

For bystanders and customers

Never walk under the operating equipment. Keep out of the platform’s path and the marked work area. Do not distract the operator for a photo.
Arrange building access. Elevator reservations, allowed hours, parking and deposits are building-specific. Check with management rather than relying on a nationwide rule.
Get an assessed quote. Volume, access and equipment can change the job. Confirm any change before work starts.
Do not assume a separate crew lunch payment. Younggu Clean’s official brochure says it does not request meal or extra charges unless moving conditions change. That is its company policy; ask your own mover what the contract includes.
Thank a new neighbor for rice cake. A friendly greeting is enough; no elaborate return ritual is required.

Respect the operator’s barriers and instructions throughout loading. Ordinary ladder-safety statistics do not describe the risk of a particular moving-truck job; the site and equipment need their own assessment.

Why is the ladder truck such a familiar Korean sight?

It is one practical answer to moving bulky belongings in dense vertical housing. The exterior platform, the packing crew, the shared elevator booking and the neighbor’s rice cake belong to different parts of the same day. Once you recognize the truck, the scene becomes an ordinary piece of neighborhood life.
