Mokpo is where the Honam Line runs out of land. The KTX from Seoul ends at a station a few blocks from the harbour, and the town around it is an old port quarter: Mokpo was opened to foreign trade in 1897, and the streets behind the station still hold the former Japanese consulate, colonial-era buildings and narrow lanes climbing towards Yudalsan, the rocky hill that stands over the old town.
That makes Mokpo an unusually easy day trip once you arrive. You can walk out of the station into the old town, eat seafood at lunch, and then take the sea cable car over the harbour to an island. The long part is the train itself, since Mokpo is the farthest point of the line, so the plan should be built around the return train.
The short answer
- Trains: KTX on the Honam Line from Yongsan, Seoul Station or Suseo, to the end of the line. Check running times and the last train back in KORAIL+.
- Station to sights: the old town is walkable from the station; take a taxi or city bus to the cable car, Gatbawi and the coast.
- Must-see: the Modern History Museum in the former Japanese consulate, the Mokpo Marine Cable Car and Gatbawi, a pair of hat-shaped rocks on the shore.
- Must-eat: 민어 min-eo (croaker) on the harbour-side croaker street.
How long is the KTX from Seoul to Mokpo?
Mokpo is the farthest stop on the line, and the time depends on your train, so take it from the app. Mokpo is the terminus of the Honam high-speed service, after Iksan and Gwangju-Songjeong.
🚄 Seoul to Mokpo by KTX (timetables change; figures from KORAIL+)
| From | Line | Arrive at | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yongsan Station | Honam Line | Mokpo Station | Check KORAIL+ | Traditional starting point for south-west trains |
| Seoul Station | Honam Line | Mokpo Station | Check KORAIL+ | More Honam services from Seoul Station since the 2026 merger |
| Suseo Station | Honam Line | Mokpo Station | Check KORAIL+ | Former SRT services, now sold as KTX |
KTX, SRT and the 2026 merger
Since 1 September 2026, the high-speed trains that ran as SRT from Suseo Station have been folded into KTX: Korail took over SR's high-speed rail business, and every high-speed train is now sold as a KTX. Book on Korail's website or in the KORAIL+ app (the old Korail Talk app, updated), which searches Seoul, Yongsan and Suseo departures together. When the merger was announced in August 2026, Korail said the old SRT app would keep selling tickets for a while, but only to non-members. Since 1 October 2026, tickets go on sale at 07:00 two months before departure. Suseo is still a separate station in Gangnam, so check which station is printed on your ticket.
Because the ride is long, an early outbound train makes the biggest difference to the day. Mokpo is also part of the newly merged Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City since 1 July 2026, so official addresses now begin with that name.
How do you get around Mokpo from the station?
Walk the old town, then take a taxi to the cable car and the coast. The old downtown starts at the station and runs west to the foot of Yudalsan; the cable car’s main station is at Bukhang, the north harbour, and Gatbawi is on the shore of Yonghae-dong, in the newer part of the city.
🚕 From Mokpo Station
| To | How | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Modern History Museum Building 1 | Walk | In the old town, Yeongsan-ro 29beon-gil 6 |
| Seosan-dong poetry-and-painting lanes | Walk | Hillside lanes above the harbour |
| Yudalsan | Walk or taxi | Park entrance at Yudal-ro 180, at the foot of the hill |
| Mokpo Marine Cable Car (Bukhang station) | Taxi or city bus | Haeyangdaehak-ro 240 |
| Gatbawi and the coastal walkway | Taxi or city bus | Namnong-ro, on the Yonghae-dong shore |
City buses link the station with the north harbour and the Gatbawi area, but routes and stop names change, so check the board at the stop or Naver Map on the day. For two or more people with limited time, a taxi between the station, the cable car and Gatbawi is the simplest option.
What should you see in Mokpo?
Mokpo Modern History Museum, Building 1 — Japan opened a consulate in Mokpo in October 1898, a year after the port was opened, and this two-storey building, completed in 1900, was built for it. It later served as Mokpo’s city hall and then a cultural centre, and reopened as a museum in 2014, telling the city’s story in seven themes. VisitKorea lists 09:00–17:30 (last entry 17:00), closed on Mondays, and adult admission of 2,000 won; there are guided tours in Korean at set times.
Mokpo Marine Cable Car — Opened on 8 September 2019, it runs 3.23 km from Bukhang station over Yudalsan to Gohado, an island across the harbour, and VisitKorea lists it as the longest in Korea. On Gohado, the observation deck is built in the shape of 13 stacked model warships, a nod to Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who regrouped his fleet on the island after the Battle of Myeongnyang. The crystal cabins have glass floors.
Gatbawi — Two sandstone pinnacles, about 8 m and 6 m tall, on the shore where the Yeongsan River meets the sea. Weathering has hollowed them into shapes that look like two men in traditional gat hats, and they were designated a Natural Monument on 27 April 2009. A walkway built out over the water lets you see them from the sea side; VisitKorea gives its hours as 05:00–24:00 in summer and 05:00–23:00 in winter, closing in bad weather. It is at its best around sunset.
Yudalsan — The hill behind the old town, with loop paths and a hiking trail past temples and pavilions. From Bogwangsa temple and the Soyojeong pavilion you look down on the city, the cable car and the harbour. The park at the bottom, Yudalsan Dalseong Park, is free and open 09:00–18:00 according to VisitKorea.
Seosan-dong poetry-and-painting lanes — A hillside neighbourhood above the harbour where poems and murals cover the walls of the houses. VisitKorea’s 2026 Mokpo course points out Yeonhui’s Supermarket, a corner shop used as a set in the film 1987, which now has a photo spot.

Where do locals eat in Mokpo?
Seafood, old-town Chinese food and a long-running bakery, all within reach of the station. Mokpo’s tables lean on the catch from the south-west coast: 민어 min-eo (croaker) in summer, small octopus, crab and skate.
Yeongran Hoetjip (Beonhwa-ro 42-1) — On Mokpo’s croaker street, open since 1961 according to VisitKorea. The fish is aged at low temperature for about a day to soften it; order slices of min-eo, the croaker pancake and the spicy fish stew, or the course that includes a raw-fish salad dressed with house-made makgeolli vinegar. VisitKorea lists 10:00–22:00, last order 21:00, open every day, and notes that it does not take reservations in July and August.
Jungwharu (Yeongsan-ro 75beon-gil 6) — VisitKorea’s 2026 Mokpo course describes it as said to be the city’s oldest Chinese restaurant. The order is 중깐 jungkkan, thin, soft noodles in a dry black-bean sauce with a fried egg on top. A 2025 food listing also names jungkkan as the dish to order and gives hours of 11:00–19:00, closed on Mondays.
Jangteo Sikdang (Yeongsan-ro 40beon-gil 23) — A crab specialist in the old town. A 2026 travel guide recommends the crab-meat bibimbap and spicy raw crab, with a 15:00–17:30 break and closures on the first and third Sundays of the month.
Korombang Bakery — An old-town bakery known for its saeu (shrimp) baguette, a good thing to carry home on the train. The same 2026 guide lists it as open every day, 08:00–21:00.

Last train and luggage
Book the return train before anything else: Mokpo is the end of the line and the trip back to Seoul is long, so the last comfortable train decides how much of the evening you get. Buy that ticket, then plan backwards, adding a taxi ride from Gatbawi or the cable car to the station. Remember that cable car tickets stop an hour before closing. Riding without a valid ticket carries a surcharge — see our guide to KTX fare rules. For luggage, ask at the station's information desk on the day; we could not confirm storage details from an official source.
