On Seoul travel maps, Sangsu-dong and Dangin-dong are always blank spots. Sandwiched between two massive commercial zones — Hongdae Station to the north, Hapjeong Station to the west — people simply pass through this neighborhood. Sangsu Station on Line 6 didn’t even open until December 15, 2000, a full 16 years after Hongdae Station. But inside this pass-through zone, something odd is hiding: restaurants that close entirely on Saturdays and Sundays. Which means they survive on weekday lunch customers alone — no tourist traffic required. And at the western end of the alley, the chimney of Korea’s first coal-fired power plant, fired up in 1930, still stands.
The Short Answer
- Sangsu Station Exit 4 threads this entire neighborhood together. From a bar 9 meters from the exit to a noodle house in Dangin-dong 300 meters away, 21 spots line up in a single row. Walking the whole thing takes 6–8 minutes.
- Saturday–Sunday closures are your local-verification stamp. Geumbok Sikdang, Seouljin, Han Seokhwa, and Tteuntteun Bapsang all close on weekends. Meanwhile, half the Chinese restaurants and barbecue joints go dark on Sundays — checking the day of the week is everything here.
- Throw out any list older than three years. Of four spots in a 2019 Korea Tourism Organization article, two have closed. Publique has been liquidated. Tutorial shut down in March 2026. Every price and closing day below has been re-verified as of July 2026.
What kind of neighborhood is this, exactly?
It’s where Korea’s first coal-fired power plant stood. Gyeongseong Electric Company broke ground in June 1929 and brought Unit 1 (10MW) online in November 1930 as the Dangin-ri Thermal Power Plant. Renamed the Seoul Thermal Power Plant in 1969, it saw Units 1 and 2 decommissioned in 1970, Unit 4 in December 2015, and Unit 5 in March 2017. This is the power plant immortalized in the 1968 song “Mapo Terminus” by the Eunbangul Sisters — “the power plant in distant Dangin-ri, asleep for the night.”
The power plant didn’t vanish — it went underground. Construction began in July 2013 on two underground LNG combined-cycle units (400MW each), completed in November 2019. It’s recorded as the world’s first large-scale underground power facility. That white column billowing from the chimney in winter? Steam, not smoke.
The Dangin-dong Power Plant Site: Where Things Stand Now
- 2013 — Designated a Seoul Future Heritage site.
- April 2021 — The above-ground portion opened as Mapo Saebit Culture Forest. It includes Hangang Ieum Park, an energy-themed park, and a sculptural installation recreating the Dangin-ri Line — the rail spur (decommissioned in 1980) that once carried coal to the plant.
- September 2025 — The Mapo 365 Community Center (total floor area 7,613.87㎡), a public amenity building, opened on the same site. The 5th-floor observation deck looks out over Bamseom Island.
- July 2026 — The Dangin-ri Cultural Creative Power Plant, converting the decommissioned Units 4 and 5 into a cultural space, has not yet opened. Unit 4 is being remodeled into exhibition halls and performance spaces; Unit 5 is slated for preservation in its original state. The benchmark is London's Tate Modern. The opening, originally planned for December 2025, has slipped to 2026, and with the survival of the operating entity (the National Cultural Space Foundation) itself under review, no date has been confirmed.
The administrative geography is easy to trip over. Sangsu-dong and Dangin-dong are both legal-status neighborhoods (beopjeong-dong), and the administrative office that governs them is not Seogyo-dong — it’s Seogang-dong. They’re grouped with Changjeon-dong and Hajung-dong, and Seogang-dong’s total population is 24,938 (resident registration, December 31, 2021). One more thing — Hongik University’s Seoul campus address is 94 Wausan-ro, Mapo-gu, which is in Sangsu-dong. The university whose name defines “Hongdae” (Hongik University area) is technically located in Sangsu-dong.
Why you shouldn't trust an old Sangsu-dong restaurant list
Because half of them are gone. This neighborhood got media attention in the early 2010s as “an alley for creatives priced out of Hongdae rents.” A March 2012 article counted over 150 distinctive cafes in the Hapjeong–Sangsu area, with monthly rent for a 15-pyeong (~50㎡) space having jumped from ₩1.2–1.3 million to over ₩2 million in three years (Hongdae’s core was pulling ₩3 million at the time). Then came two shocks. In October 2020, Sangsu-dong commercial district sales (807 stores) fell 13.6% year-on-year. More recently, the vacancy rate for small commercial spaces in Hongdae–Hapjeong spiked from 4.6% in Q2 2025 to 14.2% in Q3 (13.0% in Q1 2026).

Why do Saturday–Sunday closures matter?
Because a restaurant that closes on weekends doesn’t need tourists to survive. It’s the single most reliable local-verification signal in Sangsu-dong. All four spots below are closed Saturdays and Sundays, or operate strictly around weekday lunch service.
How to Navigate This Neighborhood Without Wasted Trips
- Go on a Wednesday or Thursday. Fewest closures across the neighborhood on these days.
- Half the proper lunch spots close on Sundays. Myeongjang, Songrin, Jeonggane Jeongyuk Sikdang, Wausan Chamsutgui, Sangsgojip, Tamra Sikdang, Dangin Sikdang, and Tteuntteun Bapsang are all closed. In their place: 24-hour Sundae Gojip, Hakata Bunko (open till 2:30 AM), Ramen Truck, Jebi Dabang, and Iri Cafe stay open.
- Saturday knocks out the set-meal houses. Geumbok Sikdang, Seouljin, Han Seokhwa, Dauri Seolleongtang Gamasot, and Ttaro Sogogi Gukbap all close — pivot to barbecue, ramen, or chain gukbap.
- Parking: Dangin-ri street parking lot (12:00–23:00, ₩300 per 5 min, free outside operating hours) is the cheapest option. Hapjeong street parking runs ₩500 per 5 min.
Where are the gukbap and seolleongtang spots deeper into the alley?
Walk more than 200 meters from Sangsu Station Exit 4 toward Iri Cafe and tourist traffic effectively drops to zero. In this stretch, three gukbap houses cluster together.

A January 2026 review calls Dauri Seolleongtang Gamasot “the old-school neighborhood joint of Dangin-dong’s food alley”; a February review tags it “Sangsu locals’ legit gem.” Ttaro Sogogi Gukbap draws reviews that open with “I live nearby so I’ve been a few times” — the defining mark of a true neighborhood gukbap house.

Yes. 19 meters from Sangsu Station Exit 1. Chinese restaurants in Sangsu-dong operate on a noticeably different price tier than those inside Hongdae proper.

How much does barbecue cost around Sangsu Station?
Around ₩12,000–19,000 per serving, and a lot of places set up outdoor street-side tables (yajang). The strip along Dongmak-ro 69–104 is the axis. A quick honesty check: the phrase “old-school vibe” (nopo gamseong) gets thrown around here a lot, but most of it is converted old buildings and intentional retro decor — not places with verified decades-long histories. The honest way to put it: they look old, and they feel old, in the right way.

Some names carry traces of old geography. Je 2 Hanganggyo (“The 2nd Han River Bridge”) is what Yanghwa Bridge was called when it opened in 1965. Walk from Sangsu-dong toward the river and there it is.
What’s open past midnight?
A ramen shop 22 meters from Exit 4 and another 123 meters from Exit 2 split the neighborhood’s late-night trade between them.
Two casual spots score highest on neighborhood embeddedness. Yeonu Gimbap Sangsu Branch opens at 07:00 in the morning (gimbap from ₩4,000). Tourist-oriented shops don’t open at 7 AM. Hongdae-sak Sangsu Main Branch does old-school tteokbokki for ₩4,000 and gimmari at ₩1,600 apiece.

Let’s split this honestly. In this neighborhood, “cafes that have survived a long time” and “cafes that roast their own beans” are not the same places. A lot of lists blur these two into one sentence, but the facts don’t back it up.

If you want a Han River view, Bean Brothers Coffee House Seoul (Sangsu-dong, opened March 2024, 6th and 7th floors) is your only option. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Han River, Yeouido, and Seogang Bridge; the 6th-floor seasonal coffee bar is reservation-only. The trade-off: prices sit well above the neighborhood norm — iced Americano around ₩9,500, coffee flight ₩25,000.
What's at the end of the road, in Dangin-dong?
Walk 300 meters from Exit 4, and Sangsu-dong ends where Dangin-dong begins. Three spots sit side by side in the alley in front of the power plant wall. This stretch is the destination of this whole guide.
Geumunhwa Dabang was created by Kim Nam-gyun, who also wrote The Alley Shop Owner’s Survival Guide. In 2011 and 2012, he organized “One Day in May” (Sangsu Dangin Art Festival) in this very alley — 40-some spaces stretched from Sangsu Station Exit 4 to the Dangin-ri Power Plant, and alongside cafes and galleries, a barbershop, a sesame oil shop, and a laundry all joined in. The festival’s director said it back then: “Dangin-ri Power Plant Road is a cultural creative power plant.” That the actual Cultural Creative Power Plant still hasn’t opened, 14 years later — that’s this neighborhood in a single sentence.
Past the three spots, follow the power plant wall farther and you’ll reach Mapo Saebit Culture Forest. Walk through the park all the way to the Han River. The Mapo 365 Community Center next door has a 5th-floor observation deck looking out over Bamseom Island.
