Sillim is not a tourist destination. There are no palaces, no photo spots, no souvenir shops. What it does have is the densest concentration of young single-person households in Seoul — and layered on top of that, a sundae alley that’s been simmering since the 1960s. The food is cheap, the portions are huge, and you’ll see almost no foreign faces. This guide unpacks both halves of that equation: how Sillim became this kind of neighborhood, and what to order once you’re inside Sundae Town.
The short answer
- Sundae Town — 3–5 min walk from Sillim Station Exits 3 & 4. There are two buildings (Minsok and Yangji) — this trips everyone up. The famous spots are nearly all in Minsok Sundae Town, 2nd and 3rd floors.
- Baek-sundae — Griddle-fried sundae and intestines with zero gochujang, only perilla oil and perilla seed powder. 20,000–22,000 KRW for 2 people (as of July 2026). Two-person minimum.
- Why this neighborhood — Gwanak-gu's single-person household rate is 62.7%, the highest in Seoul. Sillim Station to Gangnam Station: 17 minutes with no transfer. Cheap rooms + fast commutes built this food scene.
Why did Sillim become this kind of neighborhood?
Cheap housing crashed head-on into fast Gangnam access. Sillim Station sits at the western edge of Line 2 — from here to Gangnam Station is a straight shot: 17 minutes, no transfers. Yet rents are among the lowest in the entire Gangnam commuter belt. It’s a perfect storm of conditions for new graduates and job seekers.
The number 1.19 people per household says it all. This is, by the numbers, a neighborhood of people who live alone. Studio apartments and villas in Sillim-dong ran about 25.11 million KRW per pyeong (3.3 m²) as of 2025, with 45 m² units listing around a 16-million-KRW deposit and 440,000 KRW monthly rent.
How an Exam-Taker Village Became a Singles' Hub
Sillim-dong was long known as gosichon (exam-prep boarding-house district). Seoul National University sits nearby, and for decades, aspiring lawyers and civil servants crammed into cheap boarding houses here to prepare for the bar exam. When the bar exam was abolished in 2017, the exam-takers cleared out — but what remained was a dense urban fabric of tiny one-person rooms, already built. New graduates and university students filled the vacuum, and the cheap, generous restaurant culture survived intact.
The population structure shows up in the subway data too. In 2025, Sillim Station averaged 111,280 daily passengers — 5th busiest on Line 2, 8th in the entire Seoul metro system. And here’s the telling stat: more people board here between 8 and 9 AM than at any other station in Seoul (10,190 passengers). Every morning, Sillim spews out more commuters heading to Gangnam and Yeouido than anywhere else in the city. Every evening, they all come back — and fill the bars and restaurants.
What exactly is Sundae Town?
It’s a vertical food hall packed with dozens of sundae restaurants stacked floor by floor — the only thing of its kind in Seoul. It started as sundae street stalls near Dorimcheon Stream in the late 1960s. By the late 1970s, stir-fried sundae shops had moved into the nearby market. Around 1985, the cluster had swelled to about 20 shops. Then, in 1992, they moved into the building that still stands today.
And here’s the first trap. There are two buildings.
🏢 Two Sundae Town Buildings — Yes, There Are Two, and Here's Why It Matters
| Minsok Sundae Town (Wonjo Minsok) | Yangji Sundae Town | |
|---|---|---|
| Address | 14 Sillim-ro 59-gil, Gwanak-gu | 12 Sillim-ro 59-gil, Gwanak-gu |
| Layout | Ground-floor large restaurant + sundae shops packed on 2F & 3F | Sundae stir-fry specialists on floors 2–5 |
| Famous spots from TV & blogs | Nearly all of them are here | — |
| Red flag | — | “Samchonne No. 2” and similar names — people walk into the wrong building all the time |
The Samchonne you’ve seen on TV and blogs is Minsok Sundae Town, 3rd Floor, Unit 306. The “Samchonne No. 2” in Yangji Sundae Town is a different restaurant. When you enter the alley, the two buildings sit side by side. Look for the characters ‘민속’ (Minsok) on the sign and walk through that door.
Baek-sundae vs. Yangnyeom Sundae: What's the Difference?
It comes down to one ingredient: gochujang. If it’s in the pan, it’s yangnyeom. If it’s not, it’s baek. If you’re spice-averse, don’t overthink this — order baek-sundae.
🍳 Two Ways to Eat Sundae (Most Shops Charge the Same for Both)
| Baek-sundae (White Sundae & Intestines) | Yangnyeom Sundae (Spicy Stir-Fry) | |
|---|---|---|
| Sauce | No gochujang. Perilla oil + perilla seed powder only | Gochujang-based sauce |
| Spice level | Not spicy at all | Moderately spicy by Korean standards |
| Ingredients | Glass-noodle sundae, gopchang, liver + cabbage, onion, carrot, scallion, chives, tteok, jjolmyeon | Same |
| How to eat | Dip into the sauce in the center of the griddle, wrap in perilla leaves | Already seasoned — eat as-is |
Korean sundae is pig intestine stuffed with glass noodles (sweet potato starch noodles) — the texture is nothing like a European blood sausage. It comes with gopchang (intestines) and liver mixed in. If offal isn’t your thing, you can ask for sundae only — most shops are happy to adjust the ratio.
Which Restaurant Should I Pick?
First visit and nervous about hawking? Ttosuni on the ground floor. Want the one from TV? Samchonne on the 3rd floor. The consensus among local reviewers is refreshingly simple: “There’s no overwhelming difference between shops — they’ve all leveled up to roughly the same standard.” Instead of agonizing over which is “best,” pick based on vibe and convenience.
6 Sundae Town Survival Tips
- Minimum two portions. Single servings basically don't exist here. A group of five orders 3 portions + 2 portions, which comes out on two griddles.
- It arrives already cooked. The kitchen does all the stir-frying and brings it out on the hot plate — you're just keeping it warm at the table. Even in summer, the cooking heat isn't overwhelming.
- Finish with fried rice. About 2,000 KRW per person. The staff adds the leftover sauce to the griddle and fries the rice right at your table. Skip this and you've only eaten half the meal.
- What comes on the house — a canned drink, boiled liver, perilla leaves, chicken-mu (pickled radish). Perilla leaves and chicken-mu are refillable — just ask.
- Extra add-ins — jjolmyeon (chewy noodles), tteok (rice cakes), glass noodles. The jjolmyeon that crisps up against the hot griddle is a cult favorite.
- Hawker survival — The corridor hawking on the 2nd and 3rd floors is intense. Decide on your restaurant and unit number in advance and walk straight there. Saying no is completely fine — nobody takes it personally.

Which Sillim Station Exit Should I Take?
Sundae Town: Exits 3 & 4. The market: Exit 4. The bar street: Exit 6. Sillim Station is an interchange between Line 2 and the Sillim Line (light rail), so it has a lot of exits — and if you pick the wrong one, you’ll be crossing a six-lane road to fix it.
🚇 Sillim Station: Which Exit for What

Practical Tips for Travelers
- When to go — Sundae Town opens around 10–11 AM and closes around 11 PM. Peak hours are weeknights 7–9 PM. For a quiet meal, aim for 2–4 PM.
- Pair it up — Sillim is a single Line 2 ride from Gangnam, Hongdae, and Jamsil. The most realistic play: spend the day in Gangnam, then zip over 17 minutes for dinner.
- Cash — Cards work at most places, but the street stalls inside Sinwon Market are easier with cash.
- Late at night — Starlight Street is a university-area drinking strip that stays open until dawn. Like any busy nightlife district in Seoul, there will be drunk people around — stick to the main roads.
