Student vibe: why Sinchon/Ewha over Hongdae right now?
Seoul’s northwest youth scene once belonged to Sinchon. Ringed by Yonsei, Ewha Womans, Sogang, and Hongik universities, the Sinchon rotary and the streets in front of Ewha were among the busiest in 1980s–90s Seoul. The Ewha strip in particular was called one of Gangbuk’s three biggest commercial districts (with Myeongdong and Jongno) — a “fashion district #1” full of individual clothing and accessory shops, the launchpad for trends that would sweep the country. The district runs on students, so prices stay reasonable. On a weekday afternoon, it fills with students grabbing a meal or coffee between classes. If you want to walk the ordinary day of a Seoul student rather than the Seoul of tourist photos, Sinchon/Ewha is the closer answer. Starbucks Ewha: Korea’s very first store, and a symbol of the district
No account of Sinchon/Ewha is complete without Starbucks Ewha. On 27 July 1999, the very first Starbucks store in Korea (store #1) opened right in front of Ewha Womans University.
