Yeonsu-gu has two faces, and the name Songdo belongs to both. Songdo International City is land that did not exist in 1994: a grid of glass towers, canals and university campuses built on reclaimed tidal flats, home to the UN’s Green Climate Fund and the factories of Korea’s biggest biotech firms. Two kilometres inland, the older Yeonsu of Okryeon-dong and Yeonsu-dong had the name first. Songdo Station, the old Songdo Resort site and Songdo Crab Street are all there, under a wooded hill with a Korean War memorial on its slope.
Most visitors see only the first face, on a quick trip to Central Park. It is worth adding the second. The memorial hall tells the story of the 1950 landing that turned the Korean War, the crab restaurants below it have fed day-trippers for decades, and a short ride north is Hambak Village, where Russian is the street language and the bakeries sell Uzbek flatbread.
The short answer
- Where: southern Incheon, on the coast facing Yeongjong Island. From Seoul, Line 1 to Bupyeong, then Incheon Line 1 to Central Park Station — about 1.5 hours from Seoul Station.
- Best for: a futuristic skyline and a free night view, a Korean War museum, and a crab lunch. Half a day covers Songdo; a full day adds old Yeonsu.
- Must-see: the free 33rd-floor observatory in G-Tower, then a walk around Songdo Central Park's seawater canal.
- Must-eat: blue crab stew on Songdo Crab Street in Okryeon-dong, or plov and shashlik in Hambak Village.
What is Yeonsu-gu, and why are there two Songdos?
Yeonsu-gu is the district that holds both the old coast called Songdo and the new city that borrowed the name. It was split from Incheon’s Nam-gu on March 1, 1995, with five old neighbourhoods: Okryeon, Seonhak, Yeonsu, Cheonghak and Dongchun. The reclaimed city grew next to them; Songdo-dong now has five administrative districts of its own, out of 15 in the gu. When you see “Songdo” on a sign, check which one it means.
Yeonsu in eight dates
- 372 — Baekje sends its first envoys to China from a ferry landing at 능허대 Neungheodae, in today's Okryeon-dong.
- 1984 — the Incheon Landing Operation Memorial Hall opens on September 15, the anniversary of the landing.
- 1994 — ground is broken for the Songdo reclamation city on September 10.
- 1995 — Yeonsu-gu is created from Nam-gu (now Michuhol-gu).
- 2003 — Songdo, Cheongna and Yeongjong become Korea's first Free Economic Zone (IFEZ).
- 2009 — Central Park, the Canal Walk and the 21.38 km Incheon Bridge to Yeongjong Island are completed.
- 2013 — G-Tower is finished and becomes the home of the Green Climate Fund.
- 2026 — Incheon's districts are reorganized on July 1. Yeonsu-gu is unchanged, but the far end of Incheon Bridge is now Yeongjong-gu.
The Songdo project was a gamble. The 1994 groundbreaking drew President Kim Young-sam, the 1997 financial crisis froze land sales, and a planned Daewoo tower was cancelled, Kyeongin Ilbo recalled in a 2024 column. Today Celltrion and Samsung Biologics run plants here, and the Incheon Global Campus hosts the overseas branches of several foreign universities.
How do you get to Yeonsu-gu from Seoul?
By Seoul Subway Line 1 to Bupyeong, then Incheon Line 1 south to Songdo. Incheon Line 1 runs the length of Yeonsu-gu, from Seonhak and Woninjae through Dongmak to the stations of the new city. For old Yeonsu, the Suin-Bundang Line is closer: Songdo Station sits about 1 km from the memorial hall.
🚇 Seoul to Yeonsu-gu by public transport (operator route data, Oct 2026; times are approximate)
| Route | Line / service | Approx. time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seoul Station → Bupyeong | Seoul Subway Line 1 (Gyeongin Line), express or local | 40–55 min | Express trains are faster; change at Bupyeong |
| Bupyeong → Central Park | Incheon Line 1, towards Songdo Moonlight Festival Park | About 30 min | 17 stops; the whole 37 km line takes 56 min |
| Seoul Station → Incheon Station → Songdo Station | Line 1 to its terminus, then Suin-Bundang Line 4 stops | About 1 hour + 10 min | For Okryeon-dong: memorial hall, City Museum, Crab Street |
| Suwon or Gangnam (Seolleung) → Woninjae, Yeonsu, Songdo Station | Suin-Bundang Line | Long, all-stop | Handy if you start south of the Han; change to Incheon Line 1 at Woninjae |
| Incheon Airport → Songdo | Airport limousine bus via Incheon Bridge | About 40 min | Current route numbers are posted at the airport bus stops |
| Seoul Station → Incheon Nat’l Univ. | GTX-B (planned) | Not open | Construction began in 2025; target opening 2031 |
GTX-B, the express line that will end at Incheon National University Station in Songdo, began main construction in August 2025 and aims to open in 2031, KB Think reported in November 2025. Until then, the subway trip is long; pair Yeonsu with Chinatown in Jemulpo-gu via Incheon Station, or with Michuhol-gu next door.
On a layover? Songdo is about 40 minutes from the airport by road, across Incheon Bridge. With eight hours or more you can see Central Park and G-Tower and get back; see our layover plan for 4, 8 or 24 hours and, for an overnight, Incheon Airport transit and stopover hotels.
What should you see in Songdo International City?
Start at G-Tower for the overview, then walk Central Park and its museums — everything is within 10 minutes of Central Park Station.
G-Tower observatory — G-Tower was completed in February 2013 as I-Tower and renamed when the UN Green Climate Fund moved its secretariat in. At 145.8 m it is not Songdo’s tallest building, but the 33rd floor, inside the IFEZ Promotion Hall, is the free one: glass on all sides, Central Park directly below, Incheon Bridge and the West Sea beyond. Come at dusk and stay for the lights. It is closed on Mondays and on major public holidays, and opens only at 13:00 on weekends. Weekend parking is free.
Songdo Central Park — Completed in 2009, the park covers about 37 ha and was the first in Korea to fill its waterway with seawater: a canal 1.8 km long and up to about 110 m wide, filtered before it flows in. A water taxi loops the canal from the West Boat House (4,000 won for adults, 2,000 won for children in 2026 tourism data; it stops in bad weather). Around it are lawns, a sika deer garden, five footbridges lit at night, the Tri-bowl arts venue and Songdo Hanok Village, a cluster of hanok-style buildings with restaurants. The Korea Forest Service named it one of its 50 beautiful urban forests in 2024.
National Museum of World Writing — A curved building at the park’s edge, devoted to writing systems from cuneiform to digital text. Yeonsu-gu describes it as one of only a handful of museums of its kind in the world. Allow an hour; check the museum website for special exhibitions.
Incheon Urban History Museum — A free branch of the Incheon city museums, a short walk from Central Park Station. It covers the growth of Incheon from open port to megacity, which makes it a useful key to the rest of this series. Volunteer guides work most of the day; ask at the desk.
NC Cube Canal Walk — Designed by KPF, who also planned the park, and finished in October 2009: shops and cafés on two floors along a central canal, apartments above. It is about 600 m from Central Park Station Exit 3 and works best as the evening walk after G-Tower.
What is there to see in old Yeonsu?
A Korean War memorial, the free city museum and a hill with a view — all in Okryeon-dong, within a few minutes of each other.
Incheon Landing Operation Memorial Hall — Built on the slope of Cheongnyangsan and opened on September 15, 1984, it commemorates Operation Chromite, the September 1950 landing at Incheon that turned the Korean War. Hall 1 covers the planning, with documents such as the operation plan; Hall 2 has a diorama and video room and a MacArthur photo spot. Outside are an F-86F jet, an O-1 spotter plane, an M-47 tank, landing craft, a naval gun and a Hawk missile. The tower above the hall looks over the Incheon coast. Admission is free. English, Chinese and Japanese guided commentary needs at least three days’ notice.
Incheon Metropolitan City Museum — The main city museum stands next to the memorial hall and is also free. Combine the two in one visit.
Cheongnyangsan and Neungheodae Park — Cheongnyangsan is only 172 m high, but from the top you can see Songdo, Incheon Bridge and, on a clear day, Yeongjong Island and Siheung. On the coast nearby, Neungheodae Park marks the landing that Yeonsu-gu says Baekje envoys sailed from to China from 372. Each October the gu holds the Yeonsu Neungheodae Culture Festival there and at Songdo Moonlight Festival Park.

Where do locals eat in Yeonsu-gu?
In old Yeonsu, not in the towers. Songdo’s malls are full of chains; the places Incheon people name are on Songdo Crab Street, in Okryeon-dong’s long-running grill houses and in Hambak Village. All of the places below had 2025–2026 reviews or listings; prices are quoted only where a dated 2025–2026 source gives them.
Songdo Crab Street (Okryeon-dong) — Incheon designated this street a food street in 1998. Yeonsu-gu counts about 20 restaurants between the old Songdo Resort site and the memorial hall, nearly all serving 꽃게탕 kkotge-tang, spicy blue crab stew, along with steamed crab and raw marinated crab. The gu says the peak season is April to June, when crab-lovers drive in from Seoul.
- Chungnam Seosan-jip Kkotgaetang — one of three Crab Street restaurants Yeonsu-gu lists as traditional local-food restaurants. A May 2025 blog review paid 60,000 won for spicy marinated crab (two crabs); the menu also has stew, steamed crab and soy-marinated crab.
- Itjimothae San Kkotgaetang — the name means “unforgettable live crab stew”. A September 2025 roundup listed a large crab stew at 125,000 won and stir-fried octopus at 30,000 won, with hours of 10:00–21:30, closed Tuesdays.
Songdo Galmaegi (Okryeon-dong) — On Incheon’s 1998 list of designated good restaurants, a charcoal grill house for 갈매기살 galmaegisal, pork skirt meat, plus beef ribs and buckwheat noodles to finish. It is a few minutes’ walk from Crab Street and still drawing reviews in 2026.
Songdo Myeongpum Samgyetang (southern Songdo) — Yeonsu-gu’s 2011 “storytelling restaurant”: ginseng chicken soup in several versions (herbal, lacquer-tree, perilla, black garlic), plus braised chicken with aged kimchi. Tourism listings updated in July 2026 give hours of 11:00–22:00 on weekdays (break 16:00–17:30) and 11:30–21:00 at weekends, open every day. It is on the third floor of a commercial building in southern Songdo; take a taxi from Incheon Line 1.
Chaihana, Hambak Village (Yeonsu-dong) — Hambak Village is a Russian-speaking neighbourhood of ethnic Koreans from the former Soviet Union (고려인 Goryeo-in) and Central Asian workers. Chaihana, on Hambak-ro, is the Uzbek restaurant reviewers mention first: 플로프 plov (rice cooked with lamb and carrot), lamb shashlik, beef dumplings (chuchvara), manti and borscht, with Korean-style carrot salad on the side. Reviews run from 2025 to 2026.
Hambak Village in brief
Hambak Village is in Yeonsu 1-dong, about 1.5 km from Sinyeonsu Station (Incheon Line 1 and Suin-Bundang Line) — a 20-minute walk or a short taxi ride. The Goryeo-in population grew rapidly from the mid-2010s. In July 2023 NewsSeoul, citing Yeonsu-gu, reported about 12,000 residents, roughly 61% of them foreign nationals, mostly Goryeo-in, and about 40% of businesses run by foreigners; signs are in Cyrillic and Korean. The gu has run a support plan since 2023, and the second Hambak Village Culture Festival took place on October 4, 2025. Grocery shops sell rye bread, carrot salad and round Central Asian flatbread. It is a residential area — visit for a meal and a walk, and photograph shops, not people.

What does a one-day Yeonsu route look like?
- 10:00 — Okryeon-dong. Line 1 to Incheon Station, Suin-Bundang Line to Songdo Station, then a short taxi to the Incheon Landing Operation Memorial Hall. Add the City Museum next door.
- 12:30 — Crab Street. Walk down to lunch on kkotge-tang. Two people can order a small pot; bring friends for a large one.
- 14:30 — Into the new city. Taxi or bus to Central Park Station (about 15–20 minutes). Visit the Incheon Urban History Museum or the National Museum of World Writing.
- 16:30 — Central Park. Walk the canal, ride the water taxi, look in at Songdo Hanok Village.
- Sunset — G-Tower. Up to the 33rd floor for the free view as the towers light up (from 13:00 at weekends; closed Mondays).
- Evening — Canal Walk or Hambak Village. Dinner along the Canal Walk, or Incheon Line 1 to Sinyeonsu for Uzbek food, then Line 1 back via Bupyeong.
Practical tip
- Avoid Mondays. G-Tower, the memorial hall and all three museums close on Mondays.
- Two Songdos, two lines. Songdo Station (Suin-Bundang Line) is old Yeonsu; Songdo International City is on Incheon Line 1. Type the exact station into Naver Map or Kakao Map.
- Old names on maps. Yeonsu-gu did not change on July 1, 2026, but signs and blogs written before then still call Incheon Bridge's island end Jung-gu (now Yeongjong-gu) and the Incheon Station area Jung-gu or Dong-gu (now Jemulpo-gu).
- Seasons: spring for crab, summer evenings in Central Park, October for the Neungheodae festival. The canal and Canal Walk are prettiest after dark in winter too.
