The short answer

  • Netflix logged more than 97 billion hours of viewing in the first half of 2026, its biggest half-year ever. Tallied from Netflix's own data, about 8.7% of that was Korean-language titles.
  • Korean titles were No. 1 on the global non-English TV chart for 15 of 26 weeks in the first half of 2026. The most watched was Teach You a Lesson, with 48.2 million views, sixth among all series.
  • Measured by views in their first 91 days, Netflix's top three non-English series of all time are still Squid Game Seasons 1, 2 and 3.
  • KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix's most popular film ever (325.1 million views in 91 days), was made by Sony Pictures Animation in the US. It is not a Korean production.

Open Netflix almost anywhere and a Korean drama is somewhere near the top row. We wanted to know how big that really is, so we downloaded the half-year engagement reports and the weekly Top 10 files that Netflix publishes and counted. Everything below is as of October 2026.

This guide is about what the world watches from Korea. For what people in Korea watch, and which streaming apps they use, see what Koreans watch: OTT services and TV.

Roughly one hour in every 11 watched on Netflix in the first half of 2026 was Korean. Netflix says total viewing passed 97 billion hours from January to June, its highest for any half-year, and that non-English titles made up more than a third of it. It does not break out a share for Korean titles, which is why we tallied one.

How we got 8.7%: Netflix's first-half spreadsheet lists 8,194 series and 9,178 films with about 97.66 billion hours between them. We added up the hours for the 1,056 titles whose original title, written after the "//" in each row, is in Korean. That came to about 8.48 billion hours, or 8.69%. The same count for July–December 2025 gives about 9 billion of 96.21 billion hours, or 9.35%. Because it relies on how titles are labeled, a few kids' shows may be counted in or out, so allow about ±0.1 percentage points.

Outside data points the same way. According to Omdia and Digital i figures cited by the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), Korea was the second-biggest country of production on Netflix from April 2025 to March 2026, with 12.1 billion hours, behind only the US.

Netflix hours viewed by country of production, April 2025 to March 2026: United States 59.6 billion hours, South Korea 12.1 billion, Japan 8.4 billion, United Kingdom 6.8 billion, Spain 3.2 billion

The gap to the US is huge, but Korea is about 44% ahead of Japan and roughly 1.8 times the UK. In its 10th-anniversary release in October, Netflix said about 80% of its members worldwide have watched Korean content.

What is the most watched Korean drama on Netflix in 2026?

Teach You a Lesson. It came out on June 5, leaving only 25 days before the half-year cut-off, and still logged 48.2 million views. That made it the sixth most watched series of any language on Netflix in the first half, and the top non-English one. In the week of June 14 alone it drew 21.1 million views.

Netflix views of Korean series, January to June 2026: Teach You a Lesson 48.2 million, Can This Love Be Translated? 28.6 million, The Art of Sarah 25.8 million, Bloodhounds Season 2 24.3 million, The WONDERfools 20.0 million, If Wishes Could Kill 19.8 million, Boyfriend on Demand 16.1 million, My Royal Nemesis 15.7 million

A Netflix “view” is hours watched divided by runtime. It lets a 16-hour drama and a two-hour film be compared on the same scale.

A few things stand out:

One correction to watch for. Netflix’s half-year write-up grouped I Will Find You (63.9 million views) with Teach You a Lesson as shows “from South Korea”. The data file gives it no Korean original title, and Netflix’s Tudum site lists it among English TV, so we have left it out of every Korean count here. Of the 10 most watched series in the first half, Teach You a Lesson was the only Korean one.

How often did Korean shows top the weekly Top 10?

Most weeks in the first half of the year, and far less often since July. Counting Netflix’s weekly global Top 10 files, a Korean title was No. 1 in non-English TV for 15 of the 26 weeks from January to June 2026. Korean titles filled 94 of the 260 non-English TV slots (36%), and 27 different Korean shows made the list.

Weeks a Korean title was No. 1 on Netflix's global non-English TV chart: 14 of 27 weeks in the second half of 2025, 15 of 26 weeks in the first half of 2026, and at least 5 of 16 weeks from July to October 2026

The first-half No. 1s were Cashero, Can This Love Be Translated?, The Art of Sarah, Boyfriend on Demand, the BTS comeback live, Bloodhounds Season 2, Sold Out on You, If Wishes Could Kill, My Royal Nemesis and Teach You a Lesson. From the week of July 5 to the week of October 18, Korean titles were No. 1 for five weeks: three for Agent Kim Reactivated and two (weeks of October 11 and 18) for Doctor X: Mafia in White, an SBS Friday–Saturday drama that premiered on October 9. We could not confirm the country of origin of two other chart-toppers in that stretch, Our Sticky Love and Mousetrap, so we did not count them; five weeks is the minimum.

Background

There is a similar signal inside Korea. KOCCA's estimate of how much Netflix users in Korea favor Korean titles, built from FlixPatrol ranking scores, fell from 68.91% in the second quarter to 58.58% for July 1 to September 17. It is an indirect index based on chart positions, not viewing hours, so read it for direction only. KOCCA suggested a thinner release slate as one possible reason.

Over the long run, Korean shows keep turning up. Netflix says more than 200 Korean titles have made its global Top 10 since it started publishing the lists in 2021.

How many views does Squid Game have on Netflix?

Enough to hold the top three spots among Netflix’s non-English series of all time. In their first 91 days, Season 1 drew 265.2 million views, Season 2 192.6 million and Season 3 145.8 million (Netflix Tudum, checked October 29, 2026).

Netflix's most popular non-English series by views in their first 91 days: Squid Game Season 1 265.2 million, Season 2 192.6 million, Season 3 145.8 million, Money Heist Part 4 106.0 million, Lupin Part 1 99.5 million, Money Heist Part 5 99.2 million, Money Heist Part 3 80.0 million, La Palma 70.3 million, Lupin Part 2 68.4 million, Teach You a Lesson 67.2 million

Season 1 stayed in the global Top 10 for 32 weeks in a row, nine of them at No. 1, the longest run for any Korean title. Season 3 was the fourth most watched series of the second half of 2025 with 79 million views, and the three seasons together still drew 14.4 million views in the first half of 2026.

Teach You a Lesson entered this list at No. 10 with 67.2 million views, so four of Netflix’s 10 most popular non-English series are now Korean. On the film side, The Great Flood is fifth among non-English films, with 86.6 million views in 91 days.

Is KPop Demon Hunters a Korean movie?

No. It is an English-language animated film from Sony Pictures Animation in the US, made with Netflix. Korean-Canadian Maggie Kang co-directed it with Chris Appelhans, and it premiered on June 20, 2025. The story is steeped in Korea, from the Seoul skyline to Korean myth and shamanism, but by production it is not a Korean title, so it is not part of our 8.7% count either.

Its effect on how the world sees Korean culture is still easy to measure.

Press reports add more. The Statesman, carrying a Keystone-SDA report, said it had about 640 million views by its first anniversary and was the first Netflix title to spend 52 straight weeks in the global Top 10. TV Technology reported, citing Ampere Analysis, that it was the first film to pass a billion viewing hours. At the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026, it won Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden”, according to Citizen Digital. Soompi reported that “Golden” had spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 as of early October 2025.

How much has Netflix invested in Korea?

It pledged $2.5 billion over four years (2023–2026) in April 2023 and has not said how much it has spent so far. According to Digital Today, Netflix vice president Kang Dong-han said in January 2026 that the company was “faithfully” carrying out the pledge. Because Korean productions take two to three years, that report said the results would show up on screen from 2026.

Reports on how many Korean titles are coming in 2026 disagree: 24, 29 or about 30, depending on the outlet. Netflix’s own announcement page gives no total. The one point they all share is four films, down from seven in 2025.

Netflix in Korea, 10 years on

  • Launched in Korea in 2016, in a 130-country expansion. First Korean original: Yoo Byung-jae: Too Much Information (March 2018). First Korean series: Kingdom (January 2019).
  • From 2016 to 2025: more than 200 Korean titles made or co-made with 80-plus production companies, over 25,000 cast and crew, more than 70,000 extras and other day hires, and filming in over 100 cities and towns.
  • Localization through 119 dubbing studios and 3 subtitle partners, with up to 36 dubbed and 33 subtitled languages per title.

Netflix also leads at home. In a May 2026 smartphone-app study by WiseApp·Retail, cited by KOCCA, Netflix had 37.8% of Korean streaming app users and 57.7% of time spent. Coupang Play was second by users (24.4%) but had only 6.5% of the time. The Korean-viewer side of the story continues in what Koreans watch.

What can you see in Seoul?

There is no official Netflix venue in Seoul, but you can visit places from the screen and buy the merch they inspired. Netflix House, the company’s permanent fan venue, exists only in the US (Philadelphia’s King of Prussia, Dallas and Las Vegas) as of October 29, 2026. We could not confirm any official Netflix pop-up running in Seoul.

Practical tip

  • Netflix's catalog and subtitle languages can be different in Korea. Before you settle in with the hotel TV, open the title you want and check the subtitle menu.
  • The magpie-and-tiger pin sells out often. In summer 2025 it was gone 20 minutes after opening, so go in the morning. From Ichon Station (Line 4 and Gyeongui–Jungang Line) Exit 2, a walkway leads to the museum.
  • Naksan Park is best around sunset. Walk up from Dongdaemun Station as the wall lights come on.
